In 2013, a collaborative educational initiative was launched by the Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU), the SEAMEO Secretariat, and SEAMEO SPAFA. The project, titled “SEAMEO-APCEIU Collaboration on Educational Material Development for Cultural Understanding through Paintings of Southeast Asia and Korea,” focused on using genre paintings that depict traditional local festivities to promote cross-cultural awareness between Southeast Asia and Korea. A curated collection of 21 genre paintings from seven countries—Cambodia, Indonesia, Korea, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam—was compiled into an educational book intended for use in secondary schools across the region. Designed to support subjects such as art, history, and social studies, the material aims to help educators introduce students to diverse cultural traditions and historical contexts. Through this effort, the project aspires to foster mutual understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity among youth in Southeast Asia and Korea.
