This codebook is part of a classroom observation package designed for the ASEAN-UK SAGE programme to study the teaching of Grade 2 Khmer language under the proof-of-concept project for Cambodia (Strengthening M&E capacity for foundational learning outcomes).

The package can assist researchers and practitioners to gather evidence of teaching practices for early grade reading. It includes a codebook, lesson observation record, teacher survey, observer manual and lesson videos. It was supported by a 9-day training programme.

The classroom observation tool uses time-event coding. The codebook describes practices related to Khmer language learning and learner-centred activity, including pair and group work, language areas, task types, formative assessment, differentiation, and inclusion.

It can be adapted and applied in low- and middle-income countries. It can be used by local observers (regardless of their teaching or observation experience) to consistently and reliably make observations.
