Strengthening M&E Materials evaluation codebook - English

This materials evaluation coding tool was designed as part of the ASEAN-UK SAGE programme to study the teaching of Grade 1 and 2 Khmer language under the proof-of-concept project for Cambodia (Strengthening M&E capacity for foundational learning outcomes).

It is aligned with the classroom observation tool and consists of codes used to thematically analyse Grade 1 and 2 Khmer language materials and resources.

The tool can assist researchers and practitioners to gather evidence of the content in materials (e.g. teacher guides, textbooks) to identify how materials support or limit teaching practices for early grades reading. The codes cover themes including differentiation, classroom interaction, language areas, task types, assessment and inclusion. It was applied following a 5-day coding workshop.

The package can be adapted and applied in low- and middle-income countries interested in analysing the content of their early grade reading materials.
